4 Child-Friendly Landscaping Projects

Landscaping projects are hard work, but sometimes hard work can be mistaken for also being unsafe. There are many landscaping tools that are safe for most ages and can be used even by small children. There are also landscape projects that don’t need tools. This means that if you love doing landscaping projects around your home and have children who want to complete one with you, there are many child-friendly landscaping projects that you can do.

Child-Friendly Landscaping Projects

When we say child-friendly, we mean that smaller children are at least capable of completing parts of the project with you. This isn’t to say that they can do projects on their own or without adult supervision. Any project can potentially lead to a child hurting themselves if they are not shown how to properly use a tool or if a tool is too large for them to use. Parental supervision is always a must.

1. Making Animal Sanctuaries

What child doesn’t love cute small animals? If you live on a large property with trees, you can make animal houses for small critters like birds and squirrels. Depending on the kind of home you want to make, you and your family can have fun together. You can make:

  • Flower beds: Many animals and insects will come to flowers in a garden to take parts and pollinate them. If you make a raised flower bed, or one with some borders around it, small birds, pretty butterflies, and squirrels may show up.
  • Bird ponds: These standing statues serve as a place for birds to sit and drink from. They can be bought and installed, or you can make them. Either way, you need to prepare the ground for them first, a simple activity anyone can take part in.

2. Build a Fire Pit

Have you ever wanted to sit by the fire with your family and eat s’mores? You can with a fire pit, but you have to build it first. With one of our fire pit kits, you can easily and safely make them with your children.

Fire pits aren’t hot until they’re lit, and unless you use brick, they aren’t necessarily heavy. The heaviness of the materials varies. You can get a safer child-friendly fire pit for your landscaping projects if your children are on the young and small side.

3. Planting Grass

If you’ve let your lawn get away from you and need to reseed and replant it, your children can help. There are plenty of shovels, rakes, hoes, and other tools of various sizes. But if you have tools or don’t want your children to use yours, they don’t need tools to spread seeds and drop topsoil and spread it around. All they need are good gloves.

Many of the materials that go into planting and helping your grass grow do not require tools. Tools make the process faster and easier, but it can be fun to dig your hands into the ground with your children and prep your lawn that way. This is especially true if you only have to plant grass in small patches in your yard.

4. Planting a Garden

Gardens are one of the most popular and safest child-friendly landscaping projects you can do with your children. Depending on what you want to do, it can consist of laying down new soil, compost, mulch, and seeds, with nothing but small harmless tools or your hands. Gardens can be any size and use any seeds you want. Then it becomes a long-term project of watering the seeds and showing children how to take care of something long-term.
