BUILD A WALL

Accent your backyard sitting area with a freestanding wall. This can be designed in any style that suits your garden or your tastes, including Mediterranean, Renaissance, Art Deco, Modern, and 21st Century.

FIND YOUR ZEN

If you’re into the mindfulness and meditation thing, you can install a small meditation room with lounges or cushions under a canopy amidst the peaceful setting of your backyard lawn or garden.

THROW SOME SHADE

Set up a pergola around vigorous container plants to create a cool, shady spot to hang out on a sweltering summer day.

SMELL THE ROSES

Build wire archways for climbing roses to define a garden sanctuary, separating it from the rest of the yard.

OASIS

For a rooftop patio, build a welcoming nest of soft, green artificial turf to liven up your space.

FENCES

For a high-end backyard look without high-end expense, try this interesting technique: Espalier a tree. It’s easier to create this living fence than it looks, and the style can add visual interest and texture to a blank wall.

LIGHT UP

Outdoor lights are a celebratory and perennial favorite for outdoor spaces. They give off just enough sparkle to keep the light from being distracting. Buy them in pretty colors and shapes; use them to wrap a tree or drape them down a table for a twinkling centerpiece.

STEPPING STONES

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money decorating your garden, rocks and stones may be for you. They are natural, so you can get them for near-free, and they require little to no maintenance. Casting your own stepping stones is a DIY project that works especially well in cottage or country-inspired gardens.

PUT IT ON DISPLAY

Collections are often thought of as high-end or expensive, but a simple gathering of plants in miniature containers can be a great focal point for a backyard. Choose different colored containers to add a fun pop of color to the outdoor area.

VINTAGE HARDSCAPE

Many hardscaping elements like simple trellises or arbors can be found used at flea markets. They are great for adding height, defining traffic flow, or indicating movement from front to back.

BACKYARD HOME THEATER

And for the finale… If you’ve got a little more time and a tiny bit more cash, and want to invest yourself in a bigger project, try building this backyard home theatre for screening your favorite summertime classics.

PARTS:

$20 Each:

● 4 sheets of 3 R-6 1 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. RMAX (Polyiso Rigid Foam Insulation Board)

$150:

● 6 yards of pearlized spandex from Rose Brand Tendo

About $25 total:

● 8 bolts

● 8 wing nuts

● 16 washers

● Silver flex duct tape

● Painter's masking tape

● 12 steel spring clamps ($1 each)

● 3 large nails (9" or longer)

1. Take a piece of blue masking tape and stick silver duct tape to it.

(This makes the silver duct tape easy to peel off the backing and not rip away any of the foil on the sheets.)

2. Take that and cut it into square pieces to cover the bolts.

3. Use the 9” nails to fasten each piece of your spandex at the top, making sure to keep things flat.

4. The last step is to stretch the cloth across the boards, using the wood clamps to keep the cloth taut.

Now you can project your movie onto your new outdoor screen!
