Why You Should Get Decorative Rocks For Your Lawn

Making sure your lawn looks good takes a lot of work. You have to water your plants, cut your grass, add topsoil and weedkiller, and much more to ensure the whole lawn looks its best. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience, especially when it comes out looking nearly perfect. But it doesn’t always, and to cover up or fix imperfections, there are permanent, attractive solutions: decorative rocks!

Rocks are solid, crystallized minerals, that in theory, should sound like the most exciting thing in the world. In reality, most rocks in nature are usually these gray or brown, irregular misshapen things we stub our toes on. But, something they are really good at is staying in one place and lasting a really long time. That makes them perfect for covering up roots and protecting them from the elements. They’re also good for surrounding and cutting off larger plants or specific shrubs from grass and weeds. But what if they were nice to look at too? That’s what we call decorative rocks.

WHAT’S SO GOOD ABOUT DECORATIVE ROCKS?

Decorative rocks aren’t a new idea. For years, Pioneer Landscaping Centers has been offering several different variants of decorative rocks to meet the landscaping and gardening needs of people in our communities. They have several uses, both purposeful and aesthetic for your yard.

HOW ROCKS CAN HELP YOUR PLANTS SURVIVE

We already mentioned how our rocks can help protect large plant roots from the elements, and act as a border around their roots and the soil. This also protects them from weeds, and while turf doesn’t grow so well under the rocks, this does leave more water and nutrients for other plants and turf you do want.

That’s not all our rocks are good for. One of the most important things they do is form stream beds and water-wise landscapes. Soil, mulch, and dirt all absorb water and nutrients to feed the roots, but they can’t keep water and nutrients out.

Decorative rocks don’t absorb water, they’re these opaque blocks in the environment. Water will go where rocks allow, and if you want to help your plants from drowning, or want to aim water towards thirsty portions of your lawn, rocks can do that. Lay these rocks down strategically, and you can see a stream running through your lawn or garden, and not drowning your plants.

What rocks also absorb is heat. During hot days, rocks will absorb heat, which is good for two reasons. During the day, the rocks absorb the heat when your plants need it least, and during the night, the heat leaves the rocks for the ground beneath, keeping the mornings nice and cool for your flora.

HOW ROCKS CAN HELP YOUR LAWN LOOK GOOD

Regular rocks vary in size and color, but because they’re random, they’re rarely useful and attractive to the eye. Decorative rocks come pre-sized and colored to match whatever theme you’re going for with your lawn.

Pioneer Landscaping Centers has a large variety of aesthetics you can choose from to match the coloring of your home or to contrast it. You can line them around your house, garden, driveway, and walkways. They don’t have to have a specific purpose other than to look attractive and add some variety to your lawn’s appearance.

HOW MANY KINDS OF DECORATIVE ROCKS ARE THERE?

Pioneer Landscaping Centers provides many different kinds of decorative rocks. You can always find something with us. We have four types of decorative rocks, in varying sizes and colors. If there’s something you need, we have it in the size and color you want.

LANDSCAPING ROCKS

Landscaping rocks come in various colors, with over 60 choices to choose from in all! These types are small, and come in one of three sizes: 1’’ screened, ½” screened, and ¼” minus. The largest size is made of chunky rocks about an average of 1 inch in length and width, where the smallest size might look like especially colorful sand or dust.

These rocks are meant for low-water lawns that need an added visual appeal when it’s so hard for plants to grow. This makes them both a means of conservation and beautification.

RIVER ROCKS, COBBLE, AND BEACH PEBBLES

On average, river rocks, cobble, and beach pebbles are bigger than most landscaping rocks, but that’s not their main feature. On average, they are naturally smoother and even round in appearance. The forces of water and erosion have shaped them for years, and now we help you put them on your lawn. They’re another option if you wish to give your lawn a different aesthetic than what landscaping rocks offer.

Because they aren’t too much bigger than landscaping rocks on average, there isn’t much they do mechanically different for your lawn than conserve and beautify.

RIP RAP

Rip rap is far larger than the two types previously mentioned. They can be 3” to 12” +, which means if you have a lawn that collects and congests water, this is the best option for controlling it. Think of rip rap as mini boulders main for erosion control, on top of the many aesthetic choices it offers your lawn.

BOULDERS

Our boulders come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, but they are all big. We have naturally made and rounded boulders that can create a natural aesthetic for your lawn, and manufactured boulders with finger edges if you need something more specific. Like rip rap, boulders are good for erosion control and controlling the flow of excess water in your lawn.
