How To Prep Your Yard For 4th Of July Celebrations

If last year’s 4th of July party was less than memorable, this year’s has to be one for the books! So why not welcome your friends and family to the ultimate celebration with a beautiful yard?

A little landscaping can go a long way here, so put on your gardening gloves and grab your tools. It’s time to get to work!

CREATE A RELAXING SPACE

Everyone will want to lounge outside this year, so adding a patio or lounge area would be a perfect way to accommodate them. Add patio furniture to shady spots or set up a few umbrellas to provide shelter from the sun.

An outdoor kitchen, pizza oven, or grill would liven things up and keep the party outside, too. However, as long as you have enough seating and create a relaxing environment, your guests will surely be comfortable.

HANG UP FLAGS

If you don’t already have an American flag hanging from your porch, install one this month. You have plenty of time to purchase a flagpole bracket and order a flag before the 4th. Once it arrives, all you have to do is drill it into your porch column or ceiling.

You might also place a few stake flags along the sidewalk or a pathway leading to the backyard. These little guys will add a festive flair and guide guests to wherever the party is.

WHACK WEEDS

Weeds tend to pop up right after spring rains, so your yard is probably overgrown with them by now. Pull those buggers up by the root to get rid of them for good and beautify your yard before the celebration.

Survey the flower beds and pluck stray dandelions, thistle, and clover to prevent them from overcrowding your plants. Then, apply a layer of mulch to add some eye-popping color — and instant curb appeal.

TRIM TREES AND SHRUBS

If you have large trees or shrubs in your yard, remember to trim them before guests arrive. New growth can snag hair, and low-hanging branches can catch thrown balls, frisbees, and cornhole sacks. Plus, they’re a huge eyesore.

Take your trimmers to rogue growth and toss everything in a bin when you’re finished. Use dry branches and sticks to build a bonfire later in the evening.

BANISH PESTS

The last thing you want guests to see is mice, cockroaches, and other pests crawling around your yard. Therefore, if you have a bug or rodent problem, you may want to address it as soon as possible.

Lay traps around your garage and the perimeter of your yard to prevent any more from invading your property. Then, call a pest control company to remove unwanted intruders and remedy the solution once and for all.

TEND TO YOUR GRASS

If you anticipate your guests taking off their shoes and traipsing around the backyard, up your lawn game by setting up a sprinkler and fertilizing in the weeks before your big bash.

Letting the grass grow to a length of 3 to 3-1/2 inches can also minimize weeds and keep it green all summer long. Sharpen your mower blades to ensure a clean cut and reduce tearing when you do mow, too.

THE MAIN EVENT

Working hard to ensure your yard is in tip-top shape is a great way to welcome your friends and family to your home. However, after a year like 2020, they’re more likely to remember the food, fun, and good company.

Make sure everyone has a great time by adding a few yard games to the lawn, cooking up some delicious food, and just being yourself! Spending time together is the whole reason you’re throwing the party, anyway, right?
