3 Gardening Safety Tips

Gardening is fun, but if we’re not being careful and safe, it may not be worth it. Garden safety is important and makes sure we can keep on gardening. To stay safe, we have to follow every garden safety tip that we can.

Pioneer Landscaping Centers is full of people passionate and experienced in gardening. We have gardened and helped other people garden for years. This has helped us come up with some garden safety tips you can follow. This is by no means exhaustive, we’re trying to touch on the most important aspects of gardening: how long you garden for and how you are gardening.

#1 GARDEN SAFETY: DRINK WATER WHILE YOU WORK

It may be getting cooler, but you can get dehydrated just as easily. The cold does not keep water in your body or reduce your need to drink more water. You may think you’re not thirsty, but on the inside, your body is saying something different. As anyone who gardens can tell you, it’s strenuous work, and you’ll notice as you work for only a little while.

Because of the myth that it’s harder to get dehydrated in cooler climates, it becomes more common during the winter to get dehydrated than in the summer. Dehydration might even be more dangerous in winter than in the summer because you don’t expect it. When it’s cooler, you might not even sweat.

So, in a climate where you don’t feel thirsty, and you don’t sweat, you need to drink water even if you think you don’t need to. You may not know you’re dehydrated until it’s too late.

#2 GARDEN SAFETY: DON’T GARDEN FOR TOO LONG AT ONCE

Gardening is hard work, and just like when you’re at the gym, you need to take breaks. Don’t push yourself to finish a task all in one afternoon if you’re going to spend hours on just that. It’s better to underdo it than overdo it. You can always come back and finish it later. If you overdo it, you may get hurt and then won’t be able to garden the next day, so take breaks.

Also, if you can get all of your gardening done without working too long, make sure you’re not doing one thing the whole time. If you have to use the trowel on the dirt, a shovel to move dirt, or a pot to water them, don’t let yourself do the same thing for too long. If you do the same motion, again and again, you can overuse muscles and cause injuries that will make the same job painful to do later.

Gardening doesn’t have to lead to wrist or back pain if you’re careful.

#3 GARDEN SAFETY: WORK WITH GLOVES

This may sound like a no-brainer to some, and a sacrilege to others. It can feel really good and refreshing to stick your hands in the dirt and feel the soil. Maybe now and then when you’re sure it’s safe, you can, but more often than not, it’s not worth it. All you need is for your hand to get hurt once, and suddenly you may not be able to garden for a while as it heals.

Whether it be a thorn, a stray nail, sticks, broken fingernail, any of them can put a stop to your gardening. This is what makes garden safety so important. If even one thing goes wrong, you won’t be able to garden anymore.
