Backyard Games You Need This Summer

Summer is here and that means we’re all about the backyard picnics! But what is a summer hangout without some backyard games? At Pioneer Landscape Centers, we can help you create the backyard oasis of your dreams--but we like to have fun, too. Take a look at these backyard games you need this summer!

#1. CORNHOLE

Our first game is also a fun do-it-yourself for the entire family. Cornhole is a game loved by kids and adults alike, so why not make it to match your family's personality? To DIY a cornhole set, check out this guide by HGTV. Never played cornhole? No worries, the rules are rather simple.

  • Place the two boards 27 ft apart.
  • Players start the game at board 1.
  • Alternate pitching cornhole bags until each player has pitched all 4 bags.
  • Players then walk to board 2 and tally their scores.
  • Play resumes from board 2 in the same manner, making it back to board 1.
  • The player/team that scored the most in the frame before pitches first in the next frame.

#2. CROQUET

Some people may think of the scene from Alice in Wonderland where they play croquet with the upside-down flamingos. However, traditional croquet is a bit different.

While your lawn does not need to be pristine (although, we can help with that!), all you really need is a croquet set! Prices may vary so shop around.

And, if you need a little lesson on croquet, take a look at this video.

#3. HORSESHOES

Horseshoes aren’t just a game for dads--they can be family fun for all! Horseshoes are played between two people or two teams, using four horseshoes and two stakes set in a lawn or sandbox area.

The game is played by the players alternating turns tossing horseshoes at the stakes in the ground, which are traditionally placed 40 feet apart. The closest horseshoe to the stake gets 1 point, and it’s commonly first to 40 to win. If you have two shoes closer than your opponents, you get 2 points. Check all the rules here.

#4. GIANT JENGA

We love the table-top game, so why not add just a bit of spice? Also known as stacking towers, or Tumbling Timbers, this game is just like traditional Jenga, just supersized!

When set up completely, the tower can be as tall as 5 feet! The one who knocks it over loses!

#5. LADDER TOSS

Ladder Toss may be an old-school game, but it’s loved across generations. Played by two to four players who must toss bolas towards the ladder.

Points will be awarded based on where the bolas land. Want to learn how to play the official game of ladder golf? Check out the rules here.
