What Are Gardening Shears For?
Shears are a type of tool that can be used for an assortment of purposes. They include multiple different variations, where two blades are connected together to cut something. Several are not actually meant for gardening, so the question is, what are gardening shears for and what are you able to do with them?
They can be used to prune, trim, garden, and shear plants around your yard. We can explain what each of these activities you can do with a shear are.
WHAT CAN GARDENING SHEARS BE USED FOR?
PRUNING
Shears are perfect for pruning, which is when you cut specific branches, leaves, and flowers off of a plant. You want to do this to maintain the health of your plants. Pruning infected branches and leaves can stop a disease from infecting the rest of your plant. This also protects other plants around the infected one, saving them from being infected too. You can see what diseases you should look out for here.
Many gardening shears are precise and specific, so you should rarely cut off the wrong branch or more than you meant to. Most shears are also sharp enough that you can cut through thick branches. If you find that your pair of shears are too small for a massive branch you need to cut away, we have larger brands that should get the job done.
TRIMMING
Trimming is similar to pruning. It is also for the health of the plant you’re trimming, but it's not to cut away diseased or dead parts. Trimming is to downsize plants that have become overgrown. When you’re trimming a tree, you’re pairing it down so it doesn’t take over other plants or grow too big to manage.
You want to use shears because of how specific they can be. The branches are still alive, so you want to be careful you don’t cut too much or leave a big open cut. If you do that, you can leave the plant open to infection and disease. Shears allow you to cut specific branches and keep the openings you leave behind as small as possible.
GARDENING
If you’re growing flowers to eventually put into a vase, a wrap, or some kind of gift, you want to use gardening shears to cut them. Some blades won’t cut all the way through a flower's stem. This can leave it bent, malformed, and misshapen, making it unattractive to the eye. A shear can make one clean cut through multiple flowers without taking away their beauty.
SHEARING
It may sound confusing, but shearing is an activity you can do with a pair of gardening shears. Shearing isn’t as careful or specific as pruning, trimming, or gardening. Shearing is when you place a deep cut into a plant, shrinking it down to size in a big way.
Sometimes you can’t be careful with your plants, you have to cut away at them, sometimes all at once. Shears allow you to quickly cut apart cut-down bushes and plants you no longer want.
