What Are Popular Flowers To Grow In Arizona Gardens?
Now only a little over a month away from spring, it’s time to consider adding new topsoil to your garden, and what plants you want to lay down. If you’re not planning to plant all fruits and vegetables or are looking to change things up with some beautiful flowers, there are some popular flowers people are growing in their gardens across Arizona. Here are some recommendations you should consider.
MARIGOLDS
These popular flowers are perfect for Arizona gardens, being that they’re plants that need lots of sunlight and don’t need too much shade. Shade may be nice in times of extreme heat, but if you want flowers that will last through the hot summer months, marigolds are a good choice.
They are pretty typical when it comes to maintenance too. They aren’t picky about soil, and fertilizer is optional if you need to transplant them. It is better for marigolds if you water them at their base rather than from overhead, but that’s not going to kill them. The main thing to watch out for are the diseases they are suceptible to, such as gray mold, bacterial leaf spot, and root rot.
IMPATIENS
While no impatiens will thrive being in the sunlight all-day, impatiens can survive in Arizona’s hot climates better than most. Because they don’t bloom well in the shade, they’re more likely to survive than most other popular flowers.
To keep them alive when they’re in the constant sun, be sure to frequently water them. If you do so, you’ll be rewarded with vibrant colors in your Arizona garden.
Something you can worry less about with impatiens when compared to marigolds is that they’re more resistant to downy mildew.
COSMOS
Possibly the quintessential summer flower, cosmos comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors. It can be anywhere from 1 to 4 feet tall, so if you’ve seen one in someone else’s garden, it’s likely in the back so it doesn’t threaten other plants. If you plan to mix and match flowers in your garden, it’s better to position any cosmos flowers so that they aren’t too close to any shorter flowers they may cast in their shadow. Or maybe you can put a flower that needs some shade near it, so cosmos can give it some shade.
Cosmos flowers are also, like many on this list, easy flowers to maintain, making them perfect for anyone starting out in gardening. They do better in hot and dry areas and grow just fine in average or even poor soil, though we don’t recommend you use poor soil.
SUNFLOWERS
While yes, they are technically weeds, “flower” is in their name, and they are pretty. They’re considered weeds because of how fast they can spread across a yard. This means if you want sunflowers in your garden, you’re probably only going to have a lot of sunflowers and only sunflowers. Again, this isn’t too bad when sunflowers prosper in harsh environmental conditions, don’t take much work to care for compared to other flowers, and grow tall enough that you don’t have to bend down as much when you water them.
When it comes to taking care of sunflowers, it's less about keeping them alive and more about making sure there aren’t too many that they take over your yard. If you choose to grow sunflowers, you need to control their seeds and snip any that appear to be growing where you don’t want them.
