How Much Should You Be Mulching?
We all know how great mulching is for our garden. From vegetable gardens to flower beds, mulching can make your garden healthier, have less weeds and become more resistant to droughts. If done properly, mulching can save you a lot of time and strife, as you will spend less time watering, weeding and fighting pests.
PREPARATION
Before mulching, make sure that your garden is completely clear of any weeds. Since mulch will prevent any new weeds from forming, it only works effectively when your garden is already weeded. Make sure to go through your entire garden, or area where you are laying down mulch, and remove all weeds.
So, how much mulch is enough? Too much or too little can contradict any benefits you may receive from mulching, so it’s important to get the quantity right. The answer to how much mulch you should use depends on a few factors.
THE RIGHT AMOUNT
Generally, you will need to create a layer of mulch that is about 4-6 inches deep across your garden for it to be effective. However, in the shadier areas you might be able to get away with a layer that’s about 2-3 inches deep. Areas that are in full sun need the extra layers because weeds grow more heavily in these areas. As a good rule of thumb, you want to apply a thicker layer of mulch in areas with more weeds.
To calculate the quantity of mulch you’ll need to buy to cover your garden, follow these steps:
● First, measure the height and width of the area you want to cover with mulch. To find the square feet, multiply these numbers together.
● Next, determine how deep you want the mulch to be.
● Now, multiply the number of square feet by how deep the mulch will be to get the cubic square feet.
● Then, divide the cubic square feet by 324. One cubic yard of mulch will cover 324 square feet. Round this number to the nearest whole number and that should be how many cubic yards of mulch wholesale to buy.
