Stepping Stones

Welcome back to the Pioneer Blog! Last month we spent our time going over how to make the picture perfect paved pathway. If you put those instructions to use and now have yourself a pathway of perfection running through your yard, then you can go ahead and skip this entry. For those of you who thought, “Dang that pathway sure seems nice, but it is a lot of work…” Well that’s what we are here for! This time on the blog we got a simpler version of the paved pathway: Stepping Stones.

Preventing the wear and tear on heavily trafficked portions of your lawn while requiring less labor, less materials and allowing for some creative design work, stepping stones are another popular choice for DIYers. These steps apply to those with grass or some sort of turf.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Garden knife
  • Spade & Trowel
  • Soft Sand
  • Cement
  • Stepping stones

Step 1) Figure out how many stepping stone you’ll need. Measure out your stride where you’d like the path to run.

Step 2) Lay down the stepping stones where you measured your stride hitting. Using the garden knife cut around the stones to mark where you’ll be removing the grass.

Step 3) Pull up the stones and remove the grass you outlined. Using the spade and trowel under the turf to dig out the soil, leaving a hole roughly an inch deeper than the paver or stone. You do this to ensure you can safely mow the grass without worrying about damaging the blades of your mower.

Step 4) Using the trowel, layer about a ½ inch of sand into the bottom of the hole. Level and compact it.

Step 5) Mix up your cement and lay the stone or paver level. Make sure the stone sits level and beneath the surface of the lawn.

Boom, there you have it. A simple, clean, and custom walkway for your yard. You can find all the tools and materials necessary at any of our Pioneer locations. Next time we will look at something other than yard walkways we swear.
