How To Lay A Picture-Perfect Paver Pathway (Part Three)
Here we are again. Third time is the charm. By the end of this blog you are going to have everything you need to lay a perfect paver pathway in your front, back, or side yard. Any yard, really. All that will be left to do is the actual labor. You know, the fun part! We wrapped up our last post after we had created a strong, sturdy, and level base for our brick pathway. The next step is to begin laying the pavers.
8. It is time to talk about style. One of the most important decisions you are going to make when building your own brick pathway is the pattern of the bricks. Other than the bricks themselves, the pattern is the primary aesthetic element of the pathway. There are nearly endless options when it comes to creating a pattern. Contact our landscaping specialists for a few basic pattern ideas to get started.
9. It may be necessary to cut bricks/pavers in order to properly lay your selected patter. You can do this at home with a splitter or ask for it to be done at the yard.
10. Begin laying the bricks. Start along the outer edges of the pathway. When you place a brick, press it firmly into the sand base then pound with a rubber mallet until it is level with the edging you previously placed. After placing each brick use a level to ensure that the pathway remains, well… level. Proceed brick by brick until the entire pathway has been completed. Easier said than done, right?! Don’t worry, you got this!
11. Once you are finished laying the brick you will want to fill in the joints [1] between the bricks with a high-quality fine sand. Pour and ample amount of the sand over the pathway. Use a wide push broom to shift the sand back and forth over the pathway. Be very thorough. The goal is to fill in every last open millimeter between the bricks with sand. The sand will adjust and settle over time which will open small gaps. A week after you initially lay the pathway you should repeat this final step with the sand in order to fill in those gaps.
And boom! There you go! You have yourself a beautifully laid picture-perfect brick pathway. In fact, we are sure it looks so good that no one will ever believe you did the entire job yourself. And really, isn’t that the greatest reward of all?
