- Now that you have your materials on hand, it is time to dig a base. There is saying that goes, “a walkway is only as good as the base you put under it.” These are very important words of wisdom. We recommend that you pick a location that is at least 2-3 feet away from any trees so that you don’t have to worry about root systems busting up your base. It is also important to consider drainage. If water cannot drain properly from the area, the lifespan of your pathway will be significantly reduced.
- Okay, after all that, we are finally going to dig that base! Measure out the desired width of your pathway and then add 2 inches. Mark the border with string, pegs, stakes, or spray paint. Dig out the path to the depth of the pavers up to an additional 4” depending on preference
and how hard your ground is. The reason you dig to this depth is to leave room for use of a grade base and sand which will give your pathway an exceptionally sturdy foundation.
And that is just the start! Laying your own paver pathway can be a really fun and rewarding DIY project. We highly recommend it to enterprising DIY enthusiast. Check back soon for part two of this series on laying a picture-perfect paver pathway.
