How To Lay A Picture-Perfect Brick Pathway (Part Two)

Welcome back to the Pioneer Blog. Today, we are continuing our multi-part series on laying a picture-perfect brick pathway. Whether you are a seasoned DIYer or novice to the landscaping game, our how to guide has all the tips, tricks, and information needed to set you up for success. In our last post we discussed picking out materials and laying a base. Now, there is lots left to do, so let’s get back to work!

  • Place edging material of your choice around on the exterior of the excavated area .This could be standard wooden 1-inch edging, or something more creative. Drive in wood stakes to keep the edging in place.
  • Pour 1-2 inches of graded base into the excavated pathway area. We recommend you spray the base lightly with water to keep dust down. Grab a hand taper and use it to firmly and evenly compact the base.
  • Once the graded base has been firmly and evenly compact, it’s time for the sand. Pioneer’s sand, preferably.Again, you are going to use 1 inches of packed sand. Using a screed or a wooden furring strip with notches cut to the height of your chosen bricks to level the sand base. A 2x4 works great too. You may find it necessary to pour additional sand to fill in low spots. If you do so, make sure you firmly pack the additional sand. Whew, this has been a lot of work so far, but we are making good progress! We have built a strong, sturdy, and level base for out brick pathway. It is about time to begin laying bricks. In the yard that is, not on the basketball court.

However, it is a step that is going to have to wait for the third and final blog in this series. Check back soon here at the Pioneer Blog to discover the final steps required in laying a picture-perfect brick pathway.
